Mariana Mazzucato receives the Emilio Ontiveros Economics Award

Madrid, June 5, 2025. The economist and academic, Mariana Mazzucato, has collected in Madrid the Emilio Ontiveros Economics Award, awarded by the Afi Emilio Ontiveros Foundation. The award, now in its third edition, recognizes active professionals who embody the values that Emilio Ontiveros represented: in-depth knowledge of the economy and finance, commitment to outreach and training, communication skills and entrepreneurship.
The jury highlighted the award winner's influential I work on the role of the State in shaping markets, its tireless efforts to bring economic thinking closer to society, and its impact on public policy debates at the global level. Mazzucato is a teacher at University College London (UCL), where she is the founding director of the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP). In addition, she is the author of several influential books, including The Entrepreneurial State, The value of things, Economy mission and The Great Deception, works that have marked the debate on innovation and public purpose.
“I am honored to receive this award, which recognizes work that places public purpose at the heart of economic thought”, thanked the winner, who also pointed out that “at this time of profound global uncertainty, it is more important than ever to remember that we are not faced with a dilemma between economic growth and environmental sustainability, it is a false dichotomy that we must reject. Economics need not be a gloomy science focused on scarcity and sacrifice, but rather an optimistic practice based on possibilities and purpose.”
During the event, Ángel Berges, president of the Afi Emilio Ontiveros Foundation, also spoke, who commented that with this award “every year we reaffirm our commitment to bringing together financial knowledge, entrepreneurship and promoting inclusion and equity, convinced that only in this way can we contribute to a more prosperous and sustainable future”; and Adriana Scozzafava, general director of the foundation, stating that “the economy unites, but only when it is understood, only when it is used and only when it arrives.
” In addition, Eva Aguado, journalist and master of ceremonies at the event, wanted to recall that “Emilio Ontiveros and the values he represents have offered us a road map to overcome the great economic crises of the 21st century. At times like the current one, references such as Emilio Ontiveros and the Afi Foundation that bears his name are needed”.
The award ceremony took place at the Official College of Architects of Madrid (COAM) and was issued in streaming. Among those in attendance were well-known figures such as Mónica García, Minister of Health; Eloísa del Pino, president of the CSIC; and Joaquín Garralda, president of Spainsif. The winner of the second edition, Francisco Pérez García, director of research and founder of the Valencian Institute for Economic Research (Ivie) and professor at the University of Valencia, did not want to miss this edition either.
The jury for this third edition was composed of Ángel Berges, president of the Afi Emilio Ontiveros Foundation; Soledad Núñez, deputy governor of the Banco de España; Paloma Marín, vice-president of the CNMV; Vicente Salas, representing the academic world; Francisco Ros, representing the business world, and Montserrat Domínguez, representing the media.
